I was shocked when I first heard about the #BuildInPublic movement. Because it seemed to risk unready content and give competitors an advantage. Yet, it just seemed to me to be the right thing to do.

Now, having spent many years Building In Private, I realize I need a gentle transition rather than immediate change. But I'm committed to move all my websites to public, open-source repositories. More importantly, I'm exposing research notes, draft publications, ideas, and experiments to the public gaze.

History

I started seriously building websites in 2005 when I first published GoutPal.com. At which time I wanted to help fellow gout sufferers. But I also wanted to earn money. So I developed content which I tried to present as ethically as possible.

Now, compared to most Internet gout content, it was ethical. But I often felt that I put commercial considerations first. And I certainly had the mindset that I had to work on new content in private. Then launch it with commercially proven promotion routines. So that was my approach to other websites that sprang from my first foray into Information Marketing.

Legacy

Though I'm aware I can always do more, most of my content is innovative and well-received. Yet, I can't keep it going forever as a one-man band. So it occurs to me that collaboration is the way forward. Also, that would allow me to create an environment where people can develop their expertise. Then help others learn - for pleasure, for profit, or for both. Certainly, I believe part-time income from helping learners is an opportunity that many people would enjoy.

Learners

My approach to learning changed once I left university. Because I took a practical approach to learning new skills. Then passing my skills on to others. Mostly, I learned new office software. Then taught administrators how to be more efficient. But I found my practical approach was transferable to many subjects.

Now, I have thriving learning communities for gout, for food, and for online learning. So by evolving my Shrewd Learning concept, I hope to grow the number of subject areas.

Open

Like many #BuildInPublic projects, my online learning project has goals that are much more fluid than typical private enterprise. But I see this as a strength. Because I can pursue my personal goals. Yet, I'm open to collaborate with like-minded people. In order to refine the scope and objectives of Shrewd Learning. So I'll continue to introduce my online learning concepts across my own websites. While hoping that people like you will join with me in some way to improve the experience for others.
